The District Council of Mallala acquired the land near the River Light referred to as the Rockies utilising funds from the Regional Open Space Enhancement Scheme.

The reserve is adjacent to a water reserve on the River Light, on Section 157, Hundred of Grace located 12 km North East of Mallala, on the Mallala / Hamley Bridge Road.

The location is one of the few areas along the Light River where permanent water can still be found. It was locally well known as a swimming hole, for those willing to brave the reeds and leeches.

The area contains significant remnant vegetation, some of which has been identified as endangered (Pedler and Matheson, 1993). The Council has initiated a re-vegetation programme and has established some amenities in the area. The barren area was vegetated with the planting of tube stock and direct seeding from 1992 under the direction of the Mallala and District Greening Committee.

A building made of local stone houses a covered picnic area.  It was constructed in 1996.

Permanent water enhances this beautiful area, and entices visitors to walk to the rocky water holes.
